Madilyn Brown's profile

Final Major Project

I want to create a festival that celebrates the history of fishing in Cornwall while educating the importance of sustainable fishing processes that are necessary to keep our sea life alive and fishing culture thriving. I want to reach a wider audience than most seafood festivals to educate a wider range of people and create a festival a broader audience can access and enjoy.
I’m going to bring the classic fish festival into a new age, to do this I want to create a festival not only celebrates the history but also encourages a future of sustainable fishing culture in Cornwall. I want to educate people on what fish are Sustainably caught and where they can source their fish from that won't harm the environment while presenting it all in the form of a fun festival experience. I'm going to research pre-existing festivals in Cornwall that celebrate seafood and fresh produce to who their audience is and how they appeal to them.
I don’t want to carry on the same aesthetic that is overused in Cornwall. I feel that the same seaside colour scheme is no longer exciting and fails to draw in newer audiences, instead I want to use bright colours that stand out and capture the exciting nature of Falmouth and its fishing culture. I want to design something more modern and versatile that people of all ages can appreciate.
I plan to research brands in Cornwall that are already making those steps towards sustainability and to showcase them within the festival. The fishing companies and shops that I include will all only source sustainable produce and promote sustainability in any way they can. I am going to include information on sustainable fishing and marine life from sealife, marine conservation society and Cornwall good seafood guide.
By the end of my project I aim to have produced a series of outcomes to promote the festival in the forms of banners, posters and a recipe book.
